All migration brings social upheaval. Only 100km away over half of Mumbai’s 18 million population are estimated to live in slums. Some 46,000 people live per square km in Mumbai. Slums cause huge environmental damage:
Worsening water quality, excessive air pollution, noise, dust and heat, the problems of disposal of solid wastes and hazardous wastes. The situation is becoming worse every year. Cesspools form form sewage and are a breeding ground for disease infested mosquitoes and a source of groundwater pollution.
